2013 will be a pivotal year for the NHS. Trusts are facing the combined challenge of responding to the issues set out in the Francis Report and financial pressures that are really beginning to bite. What happens now will inform how the NHS develops over the next ten years. If we are to have a successful, sustainable, public provider sector, trusts need to take advantage of the freedoms that foundation trust status gives them and truly innovate to create the new patterns of healthcare delivery that the NHS desperately needs.
